fusion

 James and Georgia’s Fusion apartment.

In a world where people from different countries come together to form families, creating a home that integrates diverse traditions and lifestyles can be a challenge. At our architecture studio, we had the pleasure of working with a lovely couple, one from Greece and the other one from London, who wanted to merge their cultural backgrounds in their new Athens apartment. At Kipseli Architects, we firmly believe that a home should reflect the personalities, experiences, and cultures of its inhabitants so the aim was to create a space that would incorporate elements of both Greek and English cultures, allowing the entire family to feel at home. The result is a two-level apartment that seamlessly blends the warmth and coziness of a traditional London flat with the lightness and brightness of a Mediterranean home.

The design concept features two distinct living spaces, the first, adjacent to the bedrooms, is designed with darker tones and a cozier atmosphere, reminiscent of the traditional English apartment. The second living space, located upstairs, is brighter and opens up to a spacious terrace that offers a stunning view of the city, paying tribute to the Greek culture's emphasis on indoor-outdoor living.

One of the most notable features of this renovation is the use of continuous furniture pieces that serve multiple functions, such as a kitchenette, WC, bookcase and staircase, paying homage to the space-saving designs of traditional London apartments. By incorporating all different uses into one piece, we were able to create a sense of unity and flow throughout the space while maximizing functionality. In order to create a feeling of warmth and familiarity, we used natural colors, shades of green which symbolize growth, harmony, and balance, and specific furnishings that would speak to both cultures. Glass vitro partitions and sliding doors were strategically placed to provide privacy when needed, but also allow light to travel freely throughout the space.

At Kipseli Architects, we believe that every home should tell a unique story, and the Fusion Apartment is a perfect example of that. We are proud to have created a space that truly reflects the family's unique background and experiences, and we hope that it will be a place where they can create new memories and celebrate the best of both worlds.
