theanous

Theanous was born through the adaptive reuse of a historic building in Agios Konstantinos, Samos — the island’s first gynecological clinic nearly a century ago, with a small traditional grocery shop occupying its front section. Today, this seaside building is transformed into a boutique hotel where memory, femininity, and local tradition coexist through a contemporary architectural language.

The concept draws inspiration from Theano, philosopher and companion of Pythagoras, as well as from the geometry and proportions of the Pythagorean theorem. The name Theanous operates symbolically as both “goddess + mind” and “view + mind,” connecting feminine presence, wisdom, and the sea view. Traditional elements of Samian architecture — such as tsatmas timber framing, handmade tiles, and patterns found in local garments — are reinterpreted through a more abstract aesthetic in earthy beige and deep blue tones. The composition balances sharpness and organicity, evoking the duality inherent in feminine nature itself.

A central gesture of the project is a continuous metal balcony-bridge that unifies the upper-floor rooms through an external circulation route, culminating in an open escape toward the sea view. Through a light metal staircase, it is also connected to the inner courtyard and the shared common spaces.

Το Theanous γεννήθηκε μέσα από την επανάχρηση ενός ιστορικού κτιρίου στον Άγιο Κωνσταντίνο Σάμου — της πρώτης γυναικολογικής κλινικής του νησιού πριν από περίπου έναν αιώνα, με ένα μικρό παραδοσιακό μπακάλικο στο μπροστινό του τμήμα. Σήμερα, το παραθαλάσσιο αυτό κτίριο μετασχηματίζεται σε ένα boutique hotel όπου η μνήμη, η θηλυκότητα και η τοπική παράδοση συνυπάρχουν μέσα από μια σύγχρονη αρχιτεκτονική γλώσσα.

Το concept αντλεί έμπνευση από τη Θεανώ, φιλόσοφο και σύντροφο του Πυθαγόρα, αλλά και από τη γεωμετρία και τις αναλογίες του Πυθαγόρειου θεωρήματος. Το όνομα Theanous λειτουργεί συμβολικά ως θεά + νους αλλά και θέα + νους, συνδέοντας τη γυναικεία παρουσία, τη σοφία και τη θέα προς τη θάλασσα. Παραδοσιακά στοιχεία της σαμιώτικης αρχιτεκτονικής — όπως ο τσατμάς, τα χειροποίητα πλακάκια και τα μοτίβα των τοπικών φορεσιών — επανερμηνεύονται μέσα από μια πιο αφαιρετική αισθητική σε γήινες μπεζ και βαθιές μπλε αποχρώσεις. Η σύνθεση ισορροπεί ανάμεσα στο αιχμηρό και το οργανικό, σαν μια αναφορά στην ίδια τη γυναικεία φύση.

Κεντρική χειρονομία του έργου αποτελεί ένας ενιαίος μεταλλικός εξώστης-γέφυρα που ενοποιεί τα δωμάτια του ορόφου μέσα από μια εξωτερική διαδρομή και καταλήγει σαν φυγή προς τη θέα της θάλασσας, ενώ μέσω μιας ελαφριάς μεταλλικής σκάλας συνδέεται με την εσωτερική αυλή και τους κοινόχρηστους χώρους.
